Ferrall-A-Vent Monday March 8, 2010
Two No-Nos in Professional Sports — and Ferrall Calls them both out.
Monday is about college basketball’s conference tournaments.
Of course, Kentucky, getting ready for the SEC, had their final home game. They went unbeaten in Lexington. They finished off Florida 74-66. Too bad Ferrall had Florida an 11 ½ dog. Nice cover by the Gators. You got to love it when they come through in the clutch.
I had another huge cover last night. How about the Washington Wizards getting the big number 12 ½ in Boston against the Celtics only to lose late by a bucket? Beautiful. I’m hitting all the big games that matter. Let’s look at the other college games. Wisconsin handled Illinois late 72-57. Michigan State easy over Michigan 64-48 in East Lansing. Minnesota blew out Iowa 88-53. Wake Forest by five over Clemson. North Carolina State’s been hot lately. They beat Boston College by 12 and in the Missouri Valley Conference, Northern Iowa won the conference tournament. West Coast Conference, the Zags will meet Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga versus Saint Mary, tonight for the West Coast Conference Championship. The American East Tournament, the final will be Boston University against Vermont. That game is Saturday for some strange reason. The Colonial Conference final will be Old Dominion against William and Mary tonight. In the Northeast Tournament, Robert Morris and Quinnipiac that title game will be Wednesday night. Metro Atlantic final will be tonight. Siena against Fairfield in the championship. Siena beat Ryder by ten and Fairfield beat Niagara, so the final is Siena against Fairfield tonight at 7:00.
Shift to spring training. You know, I said on the air many times on my show on Howard 101 that Russell Martin of the Dodgers, their catcher, has gained 25 pounds in the off season. He said it was going to make him stronger. I said it was going to make him get injured a lot. Sure enough, he tears his groin. I’m right AGAIN! He’s going to miss the start of the regular season. Also, Royals’ third baseman Alex Gordon will miss four weeks with a broken right thumb and the Twins signed starting pitcher Nick Blackburn to a four year, $14 million dollar deal.
Commissioner Bud Selig says, “The impact that baseball has in society is remarkable.” I say hey, Bud, when’s the last time baseball paid my mortgage?
Talk about funny, how about all the games in Arizona that got rained out. I thought it didn’t rain in the desert. Oh, yeah, it does. They cancelled all the games. You lose.
A horrible hit in hockey on Sunday. The Penguins’ Matt Cooke leveled Boston center Marc Savard with an elbow to the head. He was concussed after the shoulder-to-head hit. It looked like an elbow-to-head hit. He’s going to get suspended, Cooke. Savard was carried off on a stretcher. It was scary. Problem I had with the whole thing was a) if a guy takes your head off in a dirty cheap shot, don’t you think some of your teammates are going to come to your aid and kick somebody’s ass? Instead, the 6‑10 Chara, the biggest player in the NHL, stands around like a pussy and does nothing about it. I mean, come on, dude. Kick somebody’s ass! That’s your fucking job. One of your star players gets his head taken off and you stand there and talk nice to the other team and ask them if they want to go out to dinner after the game or maybe eat some cookies in the locker room. Geez, dude, you are a fem. Boston should be ashamed that no one on their team stood up for their star player. It’s ridiculous.
Let’s take a look at all the finals in hockey on Sunday. Penguins won that game against Boston, their fourth straight win, 2-1. Detroit beat Chicago 5-4. They scored five goals in the second period and then held on for dear life. The Red Wings have been playing pretty good since the break. Vancouver doubled up Nashville 4-2. Calgary beat Minnesota 5-2. Iginla had a hat trick for the Flames. Carolina has won eight of nine. They blanked Atlanta in Atlanta four-nothing. Edmonton two-nothing over the Devils. How pathetic is that? The Oilers are the worst team in the league and the Devils can’t score against them? Buffalo beat the Rangers at the Garden in overtime 2-1. Philadelphia 3-1 over Toronto, and Montreal scored 2 goals with a minute 50 left in the game in Anaheim to tie it and then they win it in the shootout 4-3 over the Ducks.
Miami Heat guard Rafer Alston. He doesn’t show up for the game on Sunday. Hey, dude, you got a game? You might want to get out of bed or out of the crack house. Where are you? What are you, AWOL? How hilarious is that? They suspended him.
Magic beat the Lakers 96-94. Philly 114-101 over Toronto in Toronto. Boston 86-83 over the Wizards. I told you, I had the Wizards and the points. Nice cover. Ray Allen with the big shot that won it for the Celtics. Detroit in overtime beat Houston by three. Oklahoma City by six over Sacramento and Denver blew out Portland 118-106.
Kurt Busch won the Kobalt Tool 500 NASCAR race in Atlanta on Sunday. Matt Kenseth and Juan Pablo Montoya. Those were the top three.
Camilo Villegas was the winner of the Honda Classic. He won by three strokes and it was his best score on 72 holes since 2007.
I’m off until the 15th, which is a week from today. Monday, the 15th, I’ll be back on the air on Howard 101 on Sirius XM, the best radio on radio! I’m off this week checking my brain. Can you feel me?
Make sure you get here EVERYDAY to check out The Vent and my new segment, Ferrall’s Inside Sources by Tauntr. Go into the store and get Shake it Up shirts and hats and Team Ferrall Remetee shirts. Get it all.
You can even email in your douche bag of the week votes. We’ll get that on the air when I get back. Miserable Men are filling in for me this week on the show.
Don’t forget go to ScottBeatstheMan.com for all my picks every single day. I’m not going to stop doing the picks just because I’m off. I’ll have NHL, NBA, NCAA, and Major League Baseball spring training picks, all the conference tournament picks. Of course the big conference tournaments all start Tuesday and I’m really interested in the Big East tournament at the Garden in New York City. That’s going to be awesome. I’m going to go check it out. Going to a couple hockey games this week. I’m going to see the Rangers and Devils at the Rock and Devils-Penguins at the Rock Wednesday and Friday night, respectively. Should be a good week. So, don’t forget. Shake it up!
